The fascinating history of Frassinoro shines out in its recently restored Abbey Church and museum, where capitals and columns from the famous Benedictine Abbey, founded by Beatrice of Lorraine, mother of Matilde di Canossa, can be seen. Frassinoro has much to offer to the tourist - traditional and winter sports, walks along historical paths – the Via Bibulca and the Matilde trail, nature trails, mountain bike trails and itineraries of historical and cultural interest. Culture and history are kept alive during the week-long festival “Settimana Matildica nelle Terre della Badia”, which is held every year during the last week of July to celebrate Matilde di Canossa - with a rich programme of entertainment, cultural and gastronomic events; the drama festival held in May, “Maggio Drammatico”; and the live representation of the Via Crucis. “Maggio Drammatico”, an ancient form of popular theatre, is represented by local theatre groups which perform in national festivals and various summer events. The live Via Crucis, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, takes place once every three years on the evening of Good Friday. The whole town partakes in the preparations of the live scenes which represent the fifteen stations of the Passion and death of Christ, positioned at various points around the town, illuminated by the light of hundreds of naked torches. At just a few hundred metres from the centre of the town, it is possible to go cross-country skiing on the pistes of Lago Murato. In the year 2004, the ski area “Paradiso del Fondo”, one of the most important areas in the region for cross country skiing, organised the Italian National Cross Country Championships.
